“Eye appeal” is second only to taste for restaurants striving to satisfy customers. So when CPSI calls upon the federal government to ban food colorings in “any food widely consumed by children” it’s time to take a second look at CSPI’s claims.
New York Times health columnist Jane Brody recently aired CSPI’s accusation that food colorings can trigger hyperactivity in some kids, although Brody quickly pointed out “over and over again, many leading health organizations...have disputed these claims.” And a spokesman for the National Institute of Mental Health, which studies hyperactivity among children, called CSPI’s proposed dietary intervention “a very troublesome and harmful suggestion.”
Still, CSPI has a way of trumping facts with fantasy, especially when they play the kid card.
